Bus Riders
Only registered bus students are permitted to travel on the school buses.  Bus passes may be purchased for students to ride on occasion for day care or playtime purposes from the office.

INDOOR SHOES: We have an “indoor shoes” expectation at WES.  Students must wear their inside runners for PE classes, and whenever they are inside the building. This helps us keep our carpeted areas in the classroom much cleaner and more sanitary for students to sit on.

 Parking:
The parking lot in front of the school is ONLY for school buses and staff parking.  We ask that parents do not park in the bus loading area or walk with your children through this area.  Please use the drop off areas on Renz Road and to instruct their children to use the crosswalk safely.

If you are volunteering or visiting in the school or on the playground during the school day, please sign in at the school's office and collect a nametag.  If you are coming to school during the school day to pick up your child(ren) or to deliver something to them, please check in at the office.

All volunteers who work with children who are not under the supervision of a staff membe must fill out a Criminal Record Check.  Forms available from the RCMP.

Rollerblades, Skateboards, Bicycles & Scooters:
For safety reasons we do not permit students to rollerblade, skateboard, bicycle or scooter on the school grounds before school, at recess, and during lunch break. Those students who rollerblade to school, must bring a pair of shoes to wear at school.  Students are reminded to wear bicycle helmets and bring bike locks to lock their bikes at the bike rack, located outside exit door near Room 8.

Hallways and Library:
Before school, the library will be open to students at 8:30 am.  Students may use the library to read, knit, draw, do homework or a similar quiet activity.  Students would enter the school at the front door to go to the library and then at the 9:00 bell go back outside using the front door to line up and enter the classroom with their classmates.  At recess and lunch, we will still expect the students to go outside to get some exercise and fresh air.  Students who are in the hallway, are expected to behave in WES CARES.

 School Closure or Postponement:
On occasion, in inclement weather, it may be necessary for District Administration to close a school or release bus students earlier than usual.  Schools may remain open even if busing is cancelled.  Students within walking distance are expected to make a reasonable effort to get to school.  Listen for announcements on the local radio CKCI 1350, and on Nanaimo CKEG 1570, and Vancouver CKNW 980 or CKWX 1130 between
6:30 am and 8:00 am.

FIRST AID AND HEALTH ROOM:
Children should receive SUFFICIENT SLEEP, NUTRITIOUS MEALS, and REGULAR EXERCISE to build a healthy body and mind. Our school's medical room is beside the office.  It is supervised by office staff and designated first aid attendants. Students who become ill during the day, or have an injury, may stay in the Medical Room UNTIL THEIR PARENTS PICK THEM UP.  If parents cannot be reached by phone, your "emergency contact" or under serious conditions, doctor will be phoned. Please do not send a sick child to school. STAFF DO NOT ADMINISTER MEDICATION to students, except in special / emergency situations with the written authorization from both parent and physician.

SAFE ARRIVAL SYSTEM
To ensure the safety of students, please call the school - 248-3296 by 9:00 am, if your child will be absent or will be arriving late.  An answering machine is on during the hours of 11:00 pm - 8:30 am, for your convenience.  We will try to phone you, if your child is absent and you have not phoned.

LATE ARRIVAL
Students are encouraged to come on time for school.  Those who arrive late need to check in at the office.

AFTER SCHOOL PLANS
Please do no not call the school with after school arrangements for your child(ren), unless it is an emergency.  Ensure that your children know their after school plans before they leave in the morning.  Students are not to use the office phone to make after school arrangements.

SUPERVISION
Teachers supervise students on the playground in the morning starting at 8:30 a.m., at recess time and after school until 3:00 p.m.  Teacher assistants supervise students at lunchtime.

 In and Out Days:
All days are OUT days unless we tell students differently.  OUT days: all students are expected to be outside; dressed for the weather.  IN days: all students are expected to remain inside in their classroom, library, computer lab, or club activity.
