Winchelsea Elementary Code of Conduct

Winchelsea Code of Conduct

Our motto is “WES CARES”.  This represents the following:

Winchelsea Elementary School

Caring and Respecting Everything and Everyone Safely.

It is our expectation that everyone in our school will be caring, respectful and safe at all times.  Students are taught the rules of caring, respect and safety, what they look like and sound like in the school and on the playground.

Rules are sometimes broken and the students need to be held accountable for their actions.  We want to help children learn from their mistakes and repair the harm done in the situation.  A variety of strategies is used; each incident is looked at and each child is considered as an individual.   Consequences become more serious with the number of incidents and the age of the child.  Behaviour reminder slips provide a record of misconduct and consequences.  This allows us to track students who are having frequent behaviour problems.  If an incident is of a serious nature or if it is continuing, parents/guardians are informed and the student may be referred to the school based team.  The home and school, working together, will make a plan to support the child to make positive changes in behaviour.  The plan, often called a behaviour contract, includes positive reinforcements, consequences and communication specific to that child.

How parents can help
Parents are their children first and most important teachers.  Parents can help their children by consistently reinforcing high expectations for behaviour at home and in the community.  Please talk with your children about WES CARES at school.  Please let the school know if your child is having a problem at school with someone else and please encourage your child to report any difficulty to his/her teacher.

Each year during September, students generate lists of expected behaviours as part of their learning about WES CARES.  They give examples for expected behaviour in the class, hallways, bathrooms, playground etc.  These are currently on display on a bulletin board by the library.
